Nicknames are something that have always piqued my interest.  I have met people who have such a prevalent nickname that many did not even know their real name.

In our family all 3 children have nick names.  We didn’t plan it that way, it just kind of happened.

My oldest daughter we call her Girly.  I think it started because when she was a baby we would just call her are little girly.

My second daughter is called Tiny.  This nickname is very prevalent.  There are some children (and even some adults) from our neighbourhood and our church that don’t even know her real name. Her nickname came about because when I was pregnant with her we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl. So when explaining it to my 3-year-old I said it was a tiny little baby and when he or she comes home it will be too tiny to play or talk, we have to teach it all those things.  From then on when ever Girly would refer to the baby she called it Tiny.  The name has stuck.  She is 3 years old and will answer better to Tiny then she will to her own name.

We often refer to out little man as Manny.  The biggest reason for giving him a nickname was because he was named after his uncle.  They have the same first name.  During family get togethers there was potential for much confusion.

I like that our family has nicknames.  It adds a bit of character I guess.  What nicknames do you have in your family?
