Butterflies

My neighbour, and good friend, was asked to create the decorations for her church’s VBS.  She is very creative and come up with a great way to make butterflies that will hang from the ceiling.  She wanted to make butterflies with stain glass wings.

I was excited when she enlisted my help.

We started with a bucket of used and broken crayons, black construction paper, waxed paper, an iron and a blender.

First we sorted the crayons into groups of colors

Then we need to breakdown the crayons so that they could be melted between the sheets of waxed paper.

So we figured a blender would do the job.

This is the purple crayons with bits of white to help lighten it up.

After making a butterfly template we laid waxed paper over the outline and sprinkled on the crayons and covered it with another piece of waxed paper.  It didn’t take many crayons to cover the wing.

With a quick press from the hot iron the crayons melt and the colors blend together making a stained glass effect.

There are two butterfly outlines per butterfly.

The center or ’body’ of the butterfly was glued first than the wax paper ’wings’ were cut so that they were a little smaller than the outline.

This way the construction paper would stick together with glue and hold the waxed paper in place.

This entire project was made using stuff we had around the house, so it cost $0 to make.  That is a great price! It was also a fun project to do with the my girls.  They loved chosing to colors and seeing them melt together.

Crayon Wall Art

One of the most recognizable brands from my childhood is Crayola.  Every Christmas I loved opening up a new pack of 64 and coloring in a new coloring book with an array of fresh sharp crayons.  I have to say I am still like that today. I love a new pack of crayons.

Random side note: I’ve heard that Crayola is a fmaily run company, and they never tell their children that they are the owners..  They only find out when they are older, as a way to avoid them bragging about it at school.

Anyway, this last weekend my girls and I attempted to create a little bit of art to hang in the play room.  I am currently planning a make over for that room, so getting the ‘art’ done now will help to more that project forward.

All we needed for this project was a canvas ($8 from the dollar store) new crayons ($3 from Wal-mart) , a glue gun and a blow dryer.  To start we chose colors from a new pack of crayons.  We wanted a rainbow look and we also wanted to avoid using dark colors.  While choosing the colors we talked about what colors made other colors and tried to place them accordingly.

After deciding on the colors and lining them up along the edge of the canvas, I hot glued them onto the top of the canvas.  Now for the fun part….

Make sure to cover the work space because melted crayon wax can really fly! We grabbed the blow dryer and went to work.  I think an embossing heat gun would work really well, but we only have a blow dryer.  It took a while to get the crayons to start melting.  We had to keep the heat on the wax so that it would run all the way down the canvas.

I think it turned out really cool.

For Christmas, me and my girls made one of these for my nieces who live on the other side of the country.  We chose the colors and glued them onto a canvas.  They did the melting.  That way we can say that we did the project together!

Here is a great gift for a teacher or a child.  It was really easy to do and lots of opportunity for younger ones to help out.  As long as they are willing to part with a box of crayons.

There is a really good tutorial at Chic & Cheap Nursery!  But I’ll give you a little run down on how I did it.  First I laid out the crayon colors in order over the printed letter.  That way I knew I would have enough crayons.

From there I cut out the letter and laid it on the cutting board.  Using a craft knife I cut each crayon at the angles needed to make an “M”.  Each piece was glued into place with a hot glue gun.  Maybe don’t use a super hot setting the crayons might melt. Just saying! hahahaha

When the letter is finished you have to frame it.  I wanted to use a yellow background because yellow screams CRAYOLA!  Add a little text about who it is for and there you have it!  What a great teacher gift, don’t you think?
