Shortening Curtains While keeping the Original Hem

I love sewing! Wether it is to fix something or make something new… but the thing I really don’t like is hemming! If there is a way that I do not have to hem, let me tell you, I will find it.

I recently acquired drapes that needed to be shortened up a few inches.  I did it in such a way that made use of the orignal hem.  Trust me, this is super easy and only requires minimal sewing skills. 2013-01-02 20.41.02

Make sure that what ever fabric you are hemming is washed and dried.  You don’t want it to shrink after you have already taken up the bottom.

Measure how many inches had to be removed.  DO NOT INCLUDE the hem in this measurement. 2013-01-02 20.40.48

I had to remove 8.5 inches.  (not including the hem) Take half that measurement (4.25) and measure up from the top of the hem on the back of the curtain. I used an Olfa ruler and chalk so that it was very precise and I would have a nice straight line in the end.

Using the zipper foot on your sewing machine, sew as close to the hem as possible. But not on the hem.2013-01-02 20.57.24

(1). Cut away excess fabric, (2) leaving about a half an inch. (3)Using a seam ripper remove the stitching from the top of the original hem. (4) Seam completely open.Collage1

(5)Push half-inch seam allowance under original hem, (6) Iron the half-inch seam toward the bottom of the curtain. (7) Replace the stitching in the original hem with the half-inch hidden inside.  I used a Walking Foot for this step so that the layers would all move consistently.   Collage3 Now hang your curtains and think about how awesome you are!2013-01-03 16.51.52

This technique also works for jeans or any other garment that you wish to keep the original hem.  There are many tutorials on this, but many do not sew the excess fabric into the original hem.  Doing this makes the finished product look more polished.  One of the tutorials that I like is Magic Hemsignature

Hand-me-downs

Often times friends give me their hand-me-down clothing.  I love when this happens. Some of my favorite pieces of clothing are second-hand.

But one day when I had a friend unloading her closet on me, it struck me. Many people would never wear second-hand clothes and some are even offended at the offer.

Well, I think people get their knickers in a knot over very silly things sometimes.

I asked a friend why she hands all her clothes to me, she simply said, “cause you are always happy and thankful to take them”.  I figure that was a compliment.

The latest load that I got consisted of a few shirts that were a little to small for me.  I was so disappointed because as soon as I saw the shirt I loved it.  I took it with me thinking that there may be something that I can do with it…. the fabric as beautiful!

I figured if I took off the ties and added them to the back of the shirt it would widen it out enough to fit.

I was right!

I added an invisible zipper in between the blue strips and also widened out the sleeve holes.  My arms are way to muscle-y for most woman-y shirts.

Now I have a great “custom made” shirt.

What is your opinion on hand-me-down clothes?

Little Man Tie

Recently our family went out to New Brunswick, Canada to meet with our extended family.  We had a wonderful time exploring the Bay of Fundy together.

One thing we always try to do when we get together is have a family photo taken.  This year that included 21 people from 5 families.  (will post a full family picture soon)

Each family chose a different color.

In my family we had purple…. it was the only color left…

I was surprised to see how much purple we all have in our wardrobe…. or maybe I wasn’t.

And more to the point of my story… Manny’s Super Cute Tie.    I knew that Manny would look so cute in a little tie, but trying to find one in purple would have been a nightmare.  Thankfully a blogger has had this kind of thought process before me.  I got the idea from Amber over at Very Homemade.  She is a super sewer and figured out the ins and outs of making a tie.  Hop over and check out all her talent (and tutorials)… very impressive.
